Manual Task Handling
WHAT ARE MANUAL TASKS?
A Manual Task or Manual Handling is any activity that requires the use of force by a person to move or restrain an object.

WHEN CAN A MANUAL TASK BE HAZARDOUS?
Repetitive or sustained actions – applying force in awkward postures.
High force activities – heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling.
Exposure to vibration – e.g., using a jackhammer for long periods.
Unstable or unbalanced loads – difficult to grip or control.
KEY MANUAL HANDLING PRINCIPLES
Plan the lift– Know where the load is going and the safest path.
Move your feet – Avoid twisting your back.
Follow the BACK principle:
1.B – Bend your knees, not your back.
2.A – Abdominals braced when lifting.
3.C– Close to the load – keep it near your body.
4.K – Keep the natural curves of your spine at all times.
INJURY PREVENTION – RISK MANAGEMENT
- Identify the hazard – Recognise potential risks be
fore lifting.
- Assess the risk – How likely is injury? How severe could it be?
- Control the risk – Use safe lifting techniques, aids, or seek help.
SAFE MANUAL HANDLING TIPS
- Lift within your safe limits.
- Use a lifting aid if the load is outside your safe zone.
- Ensure trolleys, ladders, and mechanical aids are available and well-maintained.
- Make sure the load is balanced, secure, and visible before moving.
- Avoid walking backwards with a load – always maintain clear vision and footing
