Our client is a leading global manufacturer of engineered rail solutions, specialising in signalling, switching and turnout track products.
We are currently seeking an experienced Trade Assistant to join their workshop team. This is a great opportunity for someone with a hands-on background in rail track maintenance, construction, heavy fabrication, metal workshops or industrial assembly who is looking to build their skills and career in the rail industry.
About the Role
You will be involved in the manufacture, fitting and assembly of specialised rail turnouts, switching gear and other heavy-duty track components within a workshop environment.
Your duties will include:
- Fitting and assembling rail turnouts, switching gear and track products
- Manufacturing and assembling specialised rail components
- Heavy-duty mechanical assembly, tensioning and torqueing
- Assisting with fabrication, modifications and general workshop tasks
- Using hand and power tools safely and effectively
- Operating overhead gantry cranes to move heavy components
- Forklift operations and general workshop duties
- Performing basic MIG welding for fabrication, repairs and component assembly
- Reading basic measurements, drawings and work instructions
- Maintaining a clean, organised and safe workshop environment
- Working safely and efficiently as part of a team
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- Experience fitting, assembling or manufacturing heavy components
- A background in a heavy-duty workshop, fabrication, manufacturing or production environment
- Experience with mechanical assembly, tensioning and torqueing
- Experience operating an overhead gantry crane
- A valid Forklift Licence
- Basic MIG welding skills, including the ability to safely set up and operate a MIG welder
- The ability to produce basic, sound welds on mild steel and carry out simple fabrication or repair work
- Good knowledge of workshop tools and equipment
- A strong focus on safety and quality
- Good physical fitness and the ability to perform manual tasks
- Ability to pass a drug and alcohol screening
