Eye Safety in the Workplace
UNDERSTANDING EYE SAFETY RISKS
Eye injuries are a common workplace hazard and can occur over a wide range of tasks. The risk increases significantly depending on the type of work being performed and the surrounding environment.
Workers must remain aware that eye hazards are not limited to direct tasks, exposure can also occur when working nearby or passing through active work areas.
HIGH-RISK ACTIVITIES
The risk of eye injury is high when undertaking tasks such as:
- Working above shoulder height or in confined spaces
- Welding or working near welding activities (UV exposure or “welder’s flash)
- Using power tools or machinery that generate dust, sparks, or flying debris
- Working with pressurised liquids or gasses
- Handling chemicals, solvents, or cleaning products
- Working in windy conditions or using compressed air
- Awareness of surrounding activities and maintaining safe distances is essential.
EYE PROTECTION (PPE)
Eye protection must be worn whenever an eye hazard exists. It should be selected based on the hazard, level of exposure, and the task being performed.
For higher-risk work, a risk assessment should be carried out to determine whether hazards can be eliminated or reduced before relying on PPE.
WHA T DO I DO IF AN EYE INJURY OCCURS
Foreign object or chemical exposure:
- Do not rub the eye
- Rinse the clean water for 15-20 minutes
- Report the incident and seek first aid medication
Cut or puncture injury:
- Do not touch or apply pressure to the eye
- Seek first aid immediately
PREVENTATIVE PRACTICES
- Maintain eye protection in good condition
- Avoid rubbing eyes with dirty hands or gloves
- Wash hands regularly
- Stay away of surrounding work activities
